Serif font is identified by taking example of text labeled, Th. The first letter T has a small line pointing downwards from top corners, which are extra strokes.
Without open parenthesis “sans” close parenthesis serif is identified by taking example of text labeled, Th. The first letter T does not have any small line pointing downwards from top corner.
In a monospace font, each letter has the same width. This is shown by placing all the letters of the word This written in serif font in a box with same cell size.
In a regular proportional hyphen spaced font, each letter has a variable width. This is shown by placing all the letters of the word This written in sans serif font in a box with different cell size.
Note: Decorative and cursive fonts vary from system to system; rarely used as a result.
