In this illustration we see two link-layer switches blown up to a large scale with ports along one side. The left switch is larger, and includes 16 ports. Ports 1 through 8 (arranged in the same pattern as in the previous figure) are light blue, and ports 9-16 are medium blue. The right switch is smaller and includes only 8 ports. Those ports are arranged in the same pattern, however their shadings are different: port 1 is medium blue, port 2 is light blue, port 3 is light blue, port 4 is medium blue, port 5 is medium blue, port 6 is light blue, port 7 is medium blue, and port 8 is light blue. A cable runs from port 1 on the left switch to port 8 on the right switch. A second cable runs from port 16 on the left switch to port 1 on the right switch.
