*In an ideal world, you could see all your next-action reminders any way you wanted to see them: time, brain-power, location, or tool required; emotional payoff; area of life served; goals and projects supported. The issue is: How much structure is too much, for the potential value of it? If you have to think and work too much to input content into your system, you won’t do it. The digital applications for list and category management increasingly give us more opportunities to slice and dice our information in multiple new ways, but care must always be taken to evaluate if the energy required to utilize the system in the “heat of battle” is worth it. (You could have created this context-specific sorting functionality since the first software spreadsheet programs were introduced, by structuring columns and building sorting macros. But do I need to go through all that just to insert “Call my brother” as a reminder?!)
